How To Chill Out In Khao Lak

Thinking of taking a trip to Khao Lak? Well, let us help you plan the perfect itinerary, with a right mix of entertainment and relaxation. There are a lot of ways to chill-out in the area, and we are going to share our absolute nine best tried-and-tested suggestions to guarantee you make the most of your time in the Land of Smiles.

1. Unspoiled Beaches

Khao Lak is a real beachfront destination, offering beaches that range from quiet to lonesome. In fact, Khao Lak is more than just a few beaches – it’s 25 kilometres of coast with many linked stretches of white sand. The beaches are divided by a range of natural rocky capes headlands and sandy breaks. The long stretch can be divided into 7 beaches. The further north you go, the further isolated you become. The middle section – Keuk Khak area – is the busiest, with a few bars and restaurants; the southern section has only a little development; and the northern area, around Bang Sak and Koh Kho Khao, virtually nothing.

2. Ocean Activities

Water lovers will adore Khao Lak as there are so many water activities. For those with time, take a day trip to the nearby Similan Islands to discover secret and secluded beaches and caves, world-class diving/snorkelling and incredible panoramas. For those who want to stay closer to home but not miss out on all the fun, why not try surfing, body boarding, stand up paddle boarding. You can even give wakeboarding a try. And for those with a truly adventurous spirit, rent a kayak or canoe and take to the open seas.

3. Hotel Classes & Activities

For those of you fortunate enough to be staying at the Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort hotel there are a wealth of activities on offer to occupy your time in a bit of fun and, in some cases, educational way. For example, why not join the resort’s expert chefs for a cooking class and learn insider tricks for making the perfect Phad Thai or green curry. Otherwise, enjoy the serenity of the beachfront location with an early-morning yoga class on the beach. For those of you who like being active, you can try your hand at Thailand’s unique combat sport, Muai Thai. If all that wasn’t enough there is beach volleyball, dart and petanque tournaments, beach jogging, art classes and more to discover.

4. Romantic Dinner

The MANTHAI Khao Lak romantic dining concept offers you the ultimate tailor-made dining experience. Choose from one of their five-course set menus, including Asian fusion, extravaganza, seafood and vegetarian options. You and your special someone can enjoy this dining experience at their fantastic beachfront location on Bangsak Beach. In a romantic private corner of the beach, you’ll enjoy the best food and service possible. Let the ocean waves be your music, the bright stars your ceiling and the sand beneath your toes the floor for a truly unbelievable experience in one of Thailand’s most stunning settings.

5. Koh Kho Khao Cycling

Cycling around a new destination is a healthy, inexpensive and thrilling way to discover the local area, and for those wishing to explore Khao Lak at a leisurely pace, hopping aboard a two-wheeled steed is an excellent idea. If you’re feeling uber adventurous, take your bike over the waves to Koh Kho Khao island and have yourself an intrepid day-trip on this car-free island, which boasts empty beaches, forest reserves and plenty of stunning vistas. Getting to the island is super easy, just make your way to Ban Nam Khem pier and hop a 10-minute ferry ride across the channel. From there, stock up on water and snacks, and off you go…

6. Poolside Sunset Cocktails

Sometimes all you want to do is lay by the pool, preferably with a good drink in hand, are we right? If that sounds like your idea of bliss, then Outrigger’s infinity pool is the place to be. Against a backdrop of lush mountains, between swaying coconut palms overlooking the golden sands of Bangsak Beach, lies this incredible pool area.

7. Shopping

While the Khao Lak shopping scene might not be the most exciting; it does offer a few decent options for those in the know. Dotted about the place are small and medium-sized stores selling a range of sundries, souvenirs and knock-offs. For something more commercial, head to La On Village, the central shopping hub of Nang Tong Beach, which is a hive of activity. For something more local, hop to neighbouring Bang Niang, and in particular, visit the thrice-weekly market. Here you can pick up handicrafts, beachwear, electronics, arts ‘n’ crafts and more. It’s also a fantastic place to try an array of local food and drink at reasonable prices.
